The Well-Traveled Box
The beginning is hard to remember, but I think it all started in 1999 in Kansas. I don't remember where I came from or the first few places I traveled - doesn't everyone forget that earliest part of their lives? I know there was a university involved - maybe it was the University of Kansas. And then I found myself at the Kansas State Historical Society.
They let me transport microfilm. I could carry three reels comfortably, four if I had to. And lots of people wanted their microfilm! The first place I got to visit was Douglas Public Library in Colorado. How neat to travel out of state! Fortunately I did a good job transporting the microfilm, because they let me take it back to KSHS. Over the next few years the Historical Society sent me out to other libraries with microfilm, and I always brought it back when the other library was finished. I visited Winfield Public Library, Edna Buschow Memorial Library, Tonganoxie Public Library, and Johnson County Public Library. So many parts of Kansas I got to see!
Then they sent me on the big trip to Auburn University. That was far from home! Auburn took care of me though, and sent me back to the historical society. Then the real excitement began.
I still wonder if the folks at KSHS knew that this was the last time they would be seeing me. They sent me to Hutchinson Public Library in Hutchinson, Kansas. The folks there decided it was time I saw more of the world! They sent me to take microfilm to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Ann, the interlibrary loan librarian there, had the neatest accent - one of the padded envelopes told me she was from New Zealand. Then they sent me to Pfeiffer University. Pfeiffer let me take three reels of old New York Times to Carteret Community College. I did a good job again and the CCC people sent me back to Pfeiffer. A few days later I was sent back out, this time to Barton College with a reel of Journal of Research in Science Teaching. This past Monday I started back to Pfeiffer, where I arrived today.
But today things were different. The librarian looked at me, and told me I consisted of more tape than cardboard. Well, she had a point. The postal service isn't always easy on us boxes, and I'm looking pretty beat up. My bottom is starting to tear, and I really don't know how much longer I can hold up. It's about time to retire.
But instead of just tossing me away, the librarian wondered where all I had been. She started pulling off all the layers of address labels and tape. My top and side both had a quarter inch or more of labels and tape! I felt lighter than I had in years. The librarian looked at each label and reminded me of all the places I'd seen. She seemed to think my travels were really neat! I guess I have been a lot of places for a little brown box.
And guess what! The librarian isn't going to throw me away! She said a box that had done as much as I have done, deserves better and she's going to find a use for me.
And who knows, maybe she'll even let me carry microfilm one more time. I think I could make one more trip.

Duke who?
Forget the big-time guys. My little bitty employer's basketball team just won the East Regional Championship in the NCAA Tournament for Division 2! That means they made the D2's Elite Eight! Way to go Pfeiffer Falcons!!!!!

The Friday Five and More
My Friday Five are late this time because my husband is truly one of the most awesome and incredible humans to ever walk the face of the earth. I mentioned earlier that the latter half of February was a very lousy period for me. My wonderful man decided I needed a break and some stress relief. So he woke me up Friday morning with the news that he had arranged for me to be off work. Then he took me to a salon and dropped me off for the "day of indulgence". This included a facial, an hour-long massage, manicure and pedicure, hairdo and makeover. WOW!!!!! I was literally speechless, in part because I was trying not to burst into tears of love and gratefulness. It was an absolutely, positively SPLENDID day, and I felt so fantastic by the time it was through. This was my first facial, and it is something that every woman should get to do every so often. Of course, so is a massage. :) He capped off the day with dinner and a showing of Barbershop 2, which definitely had enough laughs to be worth the price of admission. I know I said it already but I'll say it again, hon: you have no idea how much this meant to me and how much I appreciate it. I'm tearing up again just thinking about it! I LOVE YOU!!!
And now, the Friday Five...
1. What was the last song you heard?
Obviously I was paying a lot of attention to the radio, because I can't remember a single song I heard today. So I suppose the last song I heard was the Maryland fight song. :P Damn Terrapins.
2. What were the last two movies you saw?
Barbershop 2 the other night. Umm... I think the last thing before that I saw in the theatre was Return of the King. I know I've seen stuff on DVD since then, but I'm drawing a total blank right this second, and I'm too lazy to go look at Netflix to figure it out.
3. What were the last three things you purchased?
Movie tickets, a raspberry cream, and dinner at Red Lobster.
4. What four things do you need to do this weekend?
Hmm, I have 3 hours left to do them! :) Laundry (done), scoop the cat boxes (done), get chicken feed (done), and dishes (umm...)
5. Who are the last five people you talked to?
Beloved hubby, Mom, my stepfather, my grandpa, and Daniel Ewing, though he didn't hear me because he was missing a key 3-pointer in Greensboro and I was yelling at the TV. :)
