February

Well, it started out decently enough, except for the stomach virus we both had the first week of the month. But in the last two weeks...

One cat given a remaining life expectancy of 6 months at most (this my first, and favorite, cat)
One cat spending the better part of a week fighting a life-threatening illness, making us think many times that he wasn't going to make it, still sick but infinitely better (this my second, and second favorite, cat)
The above cost over $1000 (so far)
One rather painful medical procedure on me, which fortunately didn't find any huge problems, but then again...all that for no huge problems. :) Once all the bills for it filter in over the next month, another $1000.
One library luncheon, the preparation for which stresses me out to the max every year, made worse this year by the fact that it was a sellout and we had a waitlist, all made pointless by the foot of snow that started coming down just beforehand causing half the attendees to not show up
One trip, a clogging convention that I'd been looking forward to for months, for the dancing, the friends, and just the GETTING AWAY, that I missed, also because of the foot of *(&#ing snow
One $1200 bill for repairs to Brian's car, ALSO because of the foot of *(#&ing snow
And close to one year since my Nanny died, a fact which for whatever reason has really hit me lately, causing a return to intense grief that I thought I was past

Taken individually, maybe all things to grumble about and get over. Taken together, one shitty two weeks. (Er, two shitty weeks. You know what I mean.) I'm counting down...only 7 1/2 hours until March! It's gotta get better. Right?

Amusingly, my secondary flavor was lemon.

What Flavour Are You? I am Vanilla Flavoured.I am Vanilla Flavoured.

I am one of the most popular flavours in the world. Subtle and smooth, I go reasonably with anyone, and rarely do anything to offend. I can be expected to be blending in in society. What Flavour Are You?

The Friday Five

Yeah, I know it's Sunday. I have one cat at the emergency vet's on IVs and oxygen, another who this week was given only a few months to live, we had a houseguest Thursday-Saturday, and I had to work all weekend. That I'm even online, much less posting, is astounding.

When was the last time you...

1. ...went to the doctor?

Thursday, for an unpleasant procedure. :(

2. ...went to the dentist?
Ummm...*flipping back thru calendar* November 19.

3. ...filled your gas tank?

Friday morning on the way to work.

4. ...got enough sleep?
Sleep? Huh? No actually, last night. We slept in this morning. :)

5. ...backed up your computer?

I'm ashamed to say that it's probably been close to a year. On the other hand, there's nothing there that I would absolutely freak if it got lost, except some stuff at work, and a lot of that is backed up to CD. It is time to do another backup tho.

Attention, high school students...

There are occasions, when your teachers insist that you WILL need these advanced math skills later in life, when they are right. Today we had to figure out some weird percentages related to grant money we are requesting. We wound up needing to solve the equation, x+.15x=(amount of $$). NONE of us remembered how to solve this equation. One x I could deal with, but I don't remember how it works with two of them. We were too embarrassed to call the math department and confess that we were 4 librarians with master's degrees who couldn't do basic algebra, so I did what I always did in high school when I couldn't figure out how to do a problem - I faked it. Fortunately I still have that touch! :)

I'll be hunting down an algebra book now...

On the other hand...

Whenever I get to feeling like I did in the last post, I get things like an email from a kindergartner (typed by his mom of course! :) ) whose school homework was to find out what country lemurs live in, asking me questions about them and saying that he has ideas of how to save the lemurs. Maybe there is hope for the world after all...

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

On the corner of the circulation desk, we have a terrarium. It's in a hexagonal aquarium-like glass container. It contains ferns growing in dirt, along with a small colorful rubber snake that I slipped in there to freak people out (it works admirably!)

The following conversation just took place between me and one of the high school students (these are, mind you, the creme de la creme of public high school students in 4 counties):

"What's that?"
"It's a terrarium."
"Does it have, like, stuff in it?"

This, ladies and gentlemen, is our future.
