How do they know?

So our systems librarian is busy setting up the new computers. And the circ desk computer died. Needless to say that's where the first new computer went. Yesterday, the old microfilm reader died literally WHILE we were setting up the new one! Someone came in to use it and he decided to use the old one since we didn't know how long it would take us to get the new one installed and set up. And the old one died on him. How do these machines know?
