The Friday Five

1. List your five favorite beverages.
Good sweet iced tea, chocolate milk, Vanilla Coke, Lemon Fanta, good lemonade

2. List your five favorite websites.

The Sesquipedalian, Fark, Schlock Mercenary, Dave Barry, and the Checkerboard. Note that these may change depending on my frame of mind. :)

3. List your five favorite snack foods.
Snickers bars, popcorn, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate-covered raisins, cheese doodles

4. List your five favorite board and/or card games.

Trivial pursuit even though I suck at it, Guillotine, PayDay (ah, childhood memories), uh, uh, I never play board/card games! OK, include the Guinness Book of World Records game (more childhood memories), and, what the hell, Uno.

5. List your five favorite computer and/or game system games.

I never play these either anymore. How 'bout Burning Monkey Solitaire, Tetris (Wesleyan Tetris was best), Snood, Bookworm, and online Scrabble with Sue even though she routinely kicked my ass when we were playing it regularly. :)

OK, that's a little scary...

I'm sitting here trying to figure out what to get my grandparents for Christmas, since I just found out the restaurant I planned to get them a gift certificate from isn't open on Sundays, which is the only time I can get by there since it's over an hour away. So in a fit of frustration I typed what the hell do I get my grandparents for Christmas into yahoo. The 18th result was...this blog.

That's kinda freaky!

Part 3...Maui

We spent our first evening in Maui in the hotel lounge watching the sunset, listening to the live music and watching the hula dancer. They offered to teach a simple hula, so of course yours truly got up there and did it. I could do the footwork...I could doo the hand movements...I could do the, er, hipwork. But doing them all three at once...good hula dancing is a LOT harder than people think.

The highlight of Maui was the snorkeling. I only had to go out maybe 10 feet from shore to start seeing stuff, and I must have seen at least 30 different kinds of fish, as well as sea urchins and stuff. Totally incredible. The other highlight was the luau. There was some good food and some...interesting food, but the show was great. Hula dancing is just amazing to watch, it was a very enjoyable show!

I thought Maui was by far the prettiest island. The beaches were beautiful, we saw tons of rainbows, and the flowers and birds and palm trees are just great. There is a large mountain in the center of the island, which we went up, but it was foggy and cloudy at the top so we couldn't see what they assured us was a spectacular view.

One more island...then this story will be done!

Only here

Most libraries get things stolen like computer mice, toys in the children's area, books. Things that make sense. Not us. We have stolen from us, network cables, framed Sean Connery READ posters, and, today, the Christmas wreath off the front door. Merry ****ing Christmas to you too, asshat!

Random update

Well, the holiday weekend went fine, we got to see some snow when we went to the mountains to visit Brian's mom & grandparents and get our Christmas tree. It was a perfect day for tree-hunting actually - snow on the ground and the trees, a little bit falling, but the roads were clear, and it was cold but not obnoxiously so. We took the dog with us and he seemed to enjoy it too. Danced in 2 parades, it was 75 degrees for one and 50 degrees for the other one a few days later - there's NC weather for ya. And for the record, 75 degrees for a Christmas parade is just not right! Also went to see Bad Santa this weekend - a guilty pleasure.

Yesterday was the last day of classes. Tomorrow I meet with my class one last time for their final presentations (in lieu of an exam) - then I spend the weekend grading papers, and another semester is over! Hard to believe.

Christmas in My Town

Dear Santa,

My name is Nathan. I am 11 years old and I live in Kannapolis. I am writing to tell you what I want for Christmas. I don't want toys, I want my Dad a job for Christmas. You see Santa, my Dad got layed off and his unemployment check stopped and there's no money coming. We live with my grandparents right now my mom and dad my two sisters and me. My grandma can't walk my grandpa got layed off from the mill. I sleep on the floor, my sister sheila sleeps on the couch, Marie on a cot. I just want a bedroom for Christmas so that I don't have to wake up on the floor Christmas morning. Santa can you help me.

Your friend,
Nathan

from the Letters to Santa in the Concord-Kannapolis Independent Tribune, 12/3/03

Thank you, NAFTA.
