Chickies!
We have chicks again! 3 this time, hatched yesterday. All 3 featherfoots, it looks like. We're also starting to get eggs almost every day now that the younger chickens are old enough to lay. Place your egg orders now, LOL!
It's been a busy couple of weeks. Working on a grant application at work, along with the usual other stuff that keeps me busy, and Thursday went to the NCLA conference in Winston-Salem. It was good this year, the session I attended was very worthwhile and the swag was quite good. (Priorities priorities! :) )
Saturday the 20th we danced at the Rowan County fair. Witness the difference between Cabarrus and Rowan counties: at the Cabarrus fair, we were dancing on a nice stage with a sound system in a new, nice building. At the Rowan fair, the "sound system" was a microphone plugged into an amp, dangling from a chair in front of the speaker on our boom box. And we had to repair the stage before we danced on it (nails were coming up, I went around with a hammer banging them down or pulling them out if they were bent.) Attendance was pitiful (fairwide, not just for our performance) and we didn't do as well as we might have, but it was fun.
Yesterday we danced at Gold Hill Founder's Day, which was a different story entirely. We had a big, appreciative audience, and our meager group (several of them couldn't make it - I had to weasel out of work myself to be there) did really well. One of our best performances since I've been with the group, which is particularly impressive when you consider that both Ginger and I were going on 4 hours sleep! In my case that was because Friday night we went to see Da Vinci's Notebook in concert (awesome), then went out afterwards with friends, got home at 1:30 am, and got up to work the Cabarrus Pets yard sale Saturday morning. The sale went really well though, so well that we're doing another one this weekend! (Which will also be followed by a clogging performance - but I will NOT stay out til 1:30 the night before this time! :) )

Successful weekend
Buttons & Tigger, the kittens we were fostering, got adopted. We went to the fair and had a great time, and also went kayaking and enjoyed that too. And best of all, MY HOUSE IS CLEAN!!!!!

The Friday Five
1. Is the name you have now the same name that's on your birth certificate? If not, what's changed?
Nope, I got married! :)
2. If you could change your name (first, middle and/or last), what would it be?
I wouldn't. I like it the way it is. Though I have caught some grief for being a short, thin person with the last name Little. ;)
3. Why were you named what you were? (Is there a story behind it? Who specifically was responsible for naming you?)
I'm named after the movie Dr. Zhivago, as are all the other people my age with the same name. I think my parents just liked my middle name.
4. Are there any names you really hate or love? What are they and why?
Madelaine and Emma for girls. I don't really like made-up names or cutesy names.
5. Is the analysis of your name at kabalarians.com / triggur.org / astroexpert accurate? How or how isn't it?
Kabalarians got a few things OK, but a lot of it was totally wrong. I rather enjoyed Triggur. :)

Every now and then...
my cynical self gets pleasantly surprised by the good people of this world. Last Wednsday night, a student needed to make 3 copies and had forgotten to bring any money. I gave her 30 cents from our spare change box, which she assured me she would pay back. Needless to say I didn't expect to see the money back, if for no other reason than she'd forget. Well, she just came in and handed me 30 cents. Now I feel like crap for being so cynical. But it's good to know that with all the crap in the world, there still are people who will pay back whatever they owe - even if it's only 30 cents.

The shittiest book selection job in the world
is now done. The high school associated with the university I work for recently got a grant. Last week, they decided to spend a good portion of this grant on library materials. (We are the library for this high school.) Friday morning, I got a call from the powers that be telling me that the high school needed an itemized list of how to spend $20k by the end of the day. Any librarians reading this are screaming with me now; for the rest of you, suffice to say that normally we would have taken several weeks to a month to carefully select the 1000 or so books that would buy. I convinced them to at least give us the weekend, so we spent a chunk of the weekend working on the project. Did I mention that we have very little in the way of selection tools/catalogs for high school books? Starting to understand the title of this blog post now? :)
I did have fun Saturday though. At the pet adoption Saturday morning, we found a home for Jade, one of the kittens we've been fostering. Then my clogging group performed at the county fair, which went very well and we had lots of fun! Since we performed, we were in the fair free, so of course we stuck around for a few hours. The kids had a blast and Ginger and I had fun watching them.
