Too good not to share
A flash movie about libraries. I especially love what it has to say about librarians! :-)

The Friday Five
1. Are you going to school this year?
No, thank goodness. I'm just teaching it, LOL!
2. If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate?
Most recently, I graduated from UNC-Greensboro with my MLS in 1998.
3. What are/were your favorite school subjects?
Science, always science. I was a biological anthropology major. In grad school, I suppose my favorite subject was reference.
4. What are/were your least favorite school subjects?
Math and history. In grad school, management.
5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite?
I've liked so many it's hard to choose. Dr. Carmichael was by far the most fun in grad school (and I learned a lot from him too).

The Friday Five (yeah, late again...)
I know it's been a weird-weather summer here this year. I realized exactly how weird when I started seeing the kudzu dying. NOTHING kills kudzu!!!
On to the questions...
1. When was the last time you laughed?
About an hour ago, reading Reader's Digest.
2. Who was the last person you had an argument with?
Umm, probably Brian, but I couldn't tell you what about.
3. Who was the last person you emailed?
Either the president of the Pets Society, or the person who emailed me asking for advice about a cat peeing outside the box. I don't remember which of those was last.
4. When was the last time you bathed?
About a half hour ago. :)
5. What was the last thing you ate?
A bowl of Kraft macaroni & cheese

I'm moving to Mars
Here is a taste of our future:
Yesterday, a colleague had to show a student where Europe is on the map. I know college students don't know geography any more, but...but...I don't even know what to say.
Today, a student asked for the time. The person at the desk pointed out the large clock on the wall above the desk. It is a clock with hands. The student didn't know how to read it.
There's room in my spaceship if you want to come along...

Stupid Library Tricks, more Creamery, and more
First things first. Robert Burrage, owner of the Cabarrus Creamery about which I have blogged repeatedly, has died. May he rest in peace, and may Heaven for him be as good as the touch of Heaven that he brought all of us. If I could draw, I would produce a Kevin Siers-type cartoon with Robert entering the Pearly Gates, and God and all the angels welcoming him in, all holding ice cream cones.
Today's patron-o-the-day: the student who was apparently irritated that, after doing her search in the database and getting a list of articles, she had to actually LOOK THROUGH the articles to pick the ones she wanted to use for her paper. What's next, expecting us to write the paper too? I probably shouldn't say that...
Yes, classes have started back, which is the reason for the (longer than usual) absence of blogging lately. Last week we had faculty workshop, then freshman orientation which for me meant advising students a good chunk of the day Friday and Saturday. Monday was library tour day, aka Stairmaster for Lara. Yesterday I taught my first class of the semester. Yes, I'm teaching again. Stop laughing. It looks like I have a good group of students this time, and I at least have a clue what I'm doing this time around, so hopefully it will go fairly well.
And on a related note, today is the second day of classes. Why the hell are there so many students in the library already?!? Not that I'm complaining, it's nice to see some of them getting an early start to their research, but it's just WEIRD!

The Friday Five
Hey, better late than never! :)
1. How much time do you spend online each day?
Oh boy. It really depends. Anywhere from none to several hours. A lot of my work involves online databases and services, so I may be online several hours a day just on work stuff. On personal stuff, usually not more than 2-3 hours a day, unless I'm really bored. :)
2. What is your browser homepage set to?
At work, to the library web page. At home, to my My Yahoo page.
3. Do you use any instant messaging programs? If so, which one(s)?
I use Yahoo messenger, and I have an AIM account but don't use it very often. The main person I chat with is on Messenger.
4. Where was your first webpage located?
It was hosted on InfiNet, my ISP at the time. I think. That was a long time ago!
5. How long have you had your current website?
Umm, which one? :) The actual homepage has been around - in this incarnation anyway - for probably 5ish years. The oldest part of my assorted pages is the dinosaur page, which I think I put up in late 1996 or early 1997.

The Friday Five
1. What's the last place you traveled to, outside your own home state/country?
Washington, DC to visit Stacy & Colby and Dr. Belgo and Oksana. Out of the country, our last trip was to Cyprus and Greece two years ago.
2. What's the most bizarre/unusual thing that's ever happened to you while traveling?
When I was 13, my mom was looking at a beautiful and very expensive chess set in a shop in NYC. The store owner offered to trade her the chess set for me. Beej, I don't remember anything especially bizarre on any trips we've taken, either.
3. If you could take off to anywhere, money and time being no object, where would you go?
Are politics also no object? Africa.
4. Do you prefer traveling by plane, train or car?
Train, train, train!
5. What's the next place on your list to visit?
Well, I'm scheduled to go to Hawaii with Mom my grandpa in October, if it doesn't get postponed again. Brian & I will likely be headed to Macworld San Francisco in January. And somewhere in there will be another DC run, I'm sure!

CHEEEEEEESE!
Well, after 2 more rounds of novocaine, an hour of adjustments yesterday, and two and a half hours of cementing, scraping, and flossing with sandpaper today, here it is!
Well, well worth the 8 hours in the chair. Dr. Linker is just fantastic. I'm going to go take more Tylenol now. :)
On another note, I met a person named Archimedes today. Another good thing about Novocaine is that the loss of muscle control it causes makes it harder for your face to show the extreme surprise of meeting someone named Archimedes.

The Friday Five
1. What time do you wake up on weekday mornings?
The alarm goes off at 6:45. On a good morning, I drag my sorry butt out of the bed by 7. Good mornings are in the minority.
2. Do you sleep in on the weekends? How late?
Usually. I prefer to be up by 9 at the latest, but if I was up pretty late the night before it probably won't happen. I don't set an alarm on weekends unless there's somewhere specific I have to be.
3. Aside from waking up, what is the first thing you do in the morning?
Remove the cat from the commode so I can use it. Then feed the cats.
4. How long does it take to get ready for your day?
For work, about a half hour (including feeding the cats). If I'm not doing the nice clothes/makeup/fixed hair thing, more like 15 minutes.
5. When possible, what is your favorite place to go for breakfast?
We hardly ever go anywhere for breakfast. I suppose if I could go anywhere, it would be Elmo's in Carrboro or Honey's in Durham. Around here, only place we ever go is IHOP.
