Thoughts on teaching

Well, I just submitted the final grades for my class. Teaching has been an interesting experience. I'm the sort who always was willing to do the extra credit, tried to make the best grades I could, and would have never dreamed of not turning in an assignment, especially a major one. I guess I always knew that plenty of students aren't like me, but it's still odd to fully realize it, especially at the college level. I mean, if you don't care about doing the work or what your grades are, why are you in college?

On the whole though, I think I mostly enjoyed it. I had fun coming up with assignments and activities. If I do this again, I would like to know more than 2 days before classes start so I can plan ahead of time - I felt like I was barely one step ahead of the students figuring out what we were going to do in the next class. But I had some great kids, and overall I think it went well. It is weird being called Ms. Little so regularly though!

On a totally unrelated note, we just acquired a fridge for the library staff! Woohoo!

Back in business!

Our power finally came back around noon yesterday. We've cut up about half the fallen trees and had a nice bonfire going last night. Tonight, we clean out the fridge and freezer. Woohoo! I can't express how good my own bed felt last night...

48 and dropping...

That would be the temperature in our house. Fortunately we have wonderful neighbors with a gas log (and therefore a warm house) who are letting us sleep in their spare bedroom. They also have running water (we don't) and it's even hot (gas heater), and they have a camp stove set up in the kitchen so we had bacon and eggs for breakfast this morning. Did I mention that these neighbors are wonderful? Hopefully we'll get power back on this weekend, they're going to have to replace 2 power poles and get several trees off lines and put several lines back up, so I won't be surprised if it's Sunday or even Monday. The most important stuff from the fridge is now in a cooler in the shed (hey, it's colder outside than a fridge anyway!) I'm at work (yes on Friday night, yay exams) which is how I have Net access at the moment! Now, if the damed webcast of the Checkers game will start working...

Chainsawing in a winter hell-land...

Well, the trees are pretty...the ones that are still standing. It took a lot of chainsawing for us to even get out of the neighborhood today, there were so many trees across the road. We won't even talk about how many trees and branches fell in our yard. I can tell what we're going to be doing from here til Christmas. But right now I'm at work, because it's one of the few places around that has heat. Yep, we're among the 1.6 MILLION people in NC without power. And from the looks of it we will probably be that way tomorrow too. Which for us also means no water, fun. They're saying this is the worst ice storm in the state's history and I believe it. I'm having Hurricane Hugo flashbacks from all the downed trees. And there is a minimum half-inch coating of ice on EVERYTHING. Sheesh.

I can't imagine being homeless in this mess. How could you even survive the night. In spite of all the cleanup ahead of us, and the knowledge that a tree could still fall on our house (the ice is melting, but slowly), I'm thankful that I have a house to go to. It may be a cold one, but it's a house. It could be a LOT worse.

Walking in a winter wonderland...

OK, maybe not a wonderland, but winter has come early to the NC piedmont - we have had snow and sleet on and off all day today. It snowed really hard for about an hour this afternoon, we just lay on the couch and watched. Very pretty. And we had a yardful of birds enjoying the snow. It's supposed to ice up tonight and make for nasty roads in the morning, but hopefully the trees will be pretty.

We had a nice Thanksgiving break. The usual dinner-hop on Thursday, lots of family. Friday held the highlight of the weekend - we got to spend an entire day with our niece Eliza! And got to see some of Brian's other family that we don't see often enough as well. Sunday was the annual tree decorating at my grandparents. I have been doing their tree every year since I was 2, and it's one of my favorite holiday traditions.

Today I made my flight reservations for the seminar I'm attending in Philadelphia in January. The flight up is in one of those damned mini-planes. (The little ones that seat 50 people and if you're taller than 5'6", which fortunately I'm not, you have to hunch to avoid hitting your head on the ceiling.) Coming back I get to ride in a normal plane, but to do that I have to go from Philly to Greensboro via Charlotte, complete with changing planes. The things I do to save money for the university. (I'd rather take the train, but it would involve another night in the hotel or the overnight train, which I once vowed I would never take again.)

Well, guess that about brings the ol' blog up to date. I'm off to bed...maybe I won't wake up in the middle of the night to kitty slurping noises tonight. (We have two sibling foster kitties right now, and Midnight likes to nurse LOUDLY on his sister's side, never mind that he's 8 months old. Poor Minnie Pearl has bald spots in her fur from his sucking!)
