Chainsawing in a winter hell-land...

Well, the trees are pretty...the ones that are still standing. It took a lot of chainsawing for us to even get out of the neighborhood today, there were so many trees across the road. We won't even talk about how many trees and branches fell in our yard. I can tell what we're going to be doing from here til Christmas. But right now I'm at work, because it's one of the few places around that has heat. Yep, we're among the 1.6 MILLION people in NC without power. And from the looks of it we will probably be that way tomorrow too. Which for us also means no water, fun. They're saying this is the worst ice storm in the state's history and I believe it. I'm having Hurricane Hugo flashbacks from all the downed trees. And there is a minimum half-inch coating of ice on EVERYTHING. Sheesh.

I can't imagine being homeless in this mess. How could you even survive the night. In spite of all the cleanup ahead of us, and the knowledge that a tree could still fall on our house (the ice is melting, but slowly), I'm thankful that I have a house to go to. It may be a cold one, but it's a house. It could be a LOT worse.
