Finding Emma
This is the earliest picture we'll ever have of our little girl. It's her "finding ad"...the ad placed in the local paper by Chinese authorities seeking her parents. It's a formality, of course -- almost no one ever answers one of these, and the kids stay in the institute. She's probably no more than a couple of weeks old in this picture -- of the three ads entirely visible in the frame, she's in the middle one. (Click the image to enlarge it.)
For perspective, here's the newspaper this ad came from. The babies on this double-truck spread have birthdates ranging from (if I recall correctly) about March to May. Two entire columns are kids in Hengfeng, where Emma is. At the top of the page is an inkpen, to give you an idea of the size of the page. Three months' worth of abandoned kids. That's pretty hard to swallow.
