The little oddities of adoption
There's a myriad of weirdnesses (is that a word? no? well...it is now) associated with adoption. The whole idea of become a parent via paperwork just seems so...post-modern. But the weirdest one of all (so far) is the realization that I'm already a father.
It's like this.
By the current trend, referral times are averaging six months. By that count, we are 3-4 months away from receiving our referral. The youngest referral I've ever heard of is five months, with a few more at six months. The average is considerably higher...somewhere in the 8-10 month range.
So in all likelihood, we have a daughter. She's probably in the neighborhood of 3-4 months old, which means she's probably already at one of China's SWI's, and her paperwork is probably already in process. My daughter is alive and being raised by someone else until I can get there.
That's really, really strange. In an oddly appealing sort of way, to be sure, but strange.
