On being informed

As part of the adoption process, I'm trying to learn more about China. About Chinese culture, politics, and daily life. About the language and history of a nation that was ancient before America was a dim shadow on Columbus' far horizon. It's daunting.

But today I found two wonderful new resources. The first is called Asia by Blog, a twice-weekly feature at SimonWorld. It's a news and events roundup covering much of the Asian sphere, and it offers a wealth of information about the region.

The second feature is far less direct. It's a work in progress called Life in China, consisting of a series of uncommented photos from all over China. Beautiful, fascinating...occasionally disturbing.

An interesting note of crossover here. Via Asia by Blog, I found this piece regarding official Chinese offense at Nike's "Chamber of Fear" ad featuring LeBron James, which ad was subsequently banned. But not before being captured by Life in China (scroll down to the bottom). Timing is, as they say, everything.
